Tool Steels
The tool steel used in most plastic molds, stamping press molds, and cold and hot-forging molds does not possess isotropic mechanical properties. Mechanical strength in the transverse direction is significantly lower than that in the longitudinal direction leading to higher cracking ratios and an increase in the fatigue crack propagation rate.
Hitachi Metals, Ltd. has solved many of these direction-related problems by changing the characteristics of its tool steel to isotropic which exhibits the same properties in all directions.
